Possible Dismissal for County Sheriff

Officials are seeking to get a dismissal for a Hancock County sheriff’s deputy after he was arrested for DUI. The deputy had a blood alcohol level of .16 when he crashed his vehicle on Tuesday.

Robinson’s patrol car was eastbound when he lost control on the snow-covered road and spun across the center line, striking a Chevrolet Cavalier owned by the Indiana Department of Transportation. The driver of the Cavalier was treated for minor injuries, Jester said.

Jester said Tuesday night that he did not know the other driver’s name or whether he had been treated at the scene or at a hospital. He said those details would be available today as part of the incident report.

Incoming Hancock County Sheriff Mike Shepherd expressed disappointment in the deputy’s actions.

Shepherd said he had discussed the situation with Col. Donnie Munden, who has served as acting sheriff in Hancock County since shortly after Sheriff Bud Gray was arrested Aug. 6 on a felony charge of obstruction of justice.

“(Robinson) will have to be put on… continue reading

Superintendent Hopes to Keep Job After DUI

Donald Stinson, the Decatur Township School District Superintendent, has asked to keep his position after being arrested for DUI. Stinson has apologized for the incident.

Decatur Township Schools Superintendent Donald Stinson apologized to the School Board on Tuesday for his arrest on drunken-driving charges and said he wants to keep his job.

Stinson called the episode a “horrific mistake” and said he is embarrassed about it.

“I hope the community accepts my apology and allows me to continue here on the road to excellence,” he said. “I will get through this; I will learn from this.”

The School Board so far has taken no action against Stinson. Board President Cathy Wiseman said the board discussed the matter in executive session before the regular meeting and will set a special meeting after Stinson’s initial hearing on the charges.

“We’re going to look very hard at this,” she said. “We don’t want Mr. Stinson to leave us… continue reading

Woman Hit and Killed by DUI Suspect

A woman was leaving the police station in Andover when she was struck by a drunk driver and killed. The man pleaded not guilty and is being held on a $50,000 bail.

“Her mom ran inside to report the crash and originally didn’t even know that her daughter had been struck outside — just knew that the vehicle had been struck. It’s only when troopers went outside that we found the woman on the grass,” State Police Sgt. Eric Bernstein said.

A trooper chased the driver.

“He caught up with that vehicle about 200 yards north of the barracks, where it had become disabled on the side of the road. He had conversation with the operator there, eventually formed the opinion that the operator was under the influence of alcohol,” Bernstein said.

Police said the driver, Robert Bryant, 50, attempted to flee the scene, but was stopped a short distance away and arrested.

Ray was taken to Lawrence General Hospital. She later died of her injuries.

“A lot of people beyond the victim and the driver are… continue reading

Nebraska Repeat DUI Offenders Held Accountable

In Nebraska, repeat DUI offenders are going to be targeted over the holidays. The state is planning to be tougher on those who get behind the wheel drunk.

OMAHA, Neb. — The holidays mean there are more parties to attend, but it also means there are more drunken drivers on the road. For most people, it’s not the first time they’ve gotten behind the wheel when they are over the legal limit, according to law enforcement officials.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving reports that a first-time offender has usually driven drunk nearly 90 times before they are arrested for DUI.

“Until we start recognizing how prevalent the problem is, people are being lost here and they’re all over the place,” said Omaha City Prosecutor Marty Conboy.

In the last couple of months, Dr. Adam Smith, Jay Bock, Dennis Chaney, Dale Aspedon, Steven Benscoter and Jessica Bedient have been killed by suspected… continue reading
