50 years of antiquing

The White Elephant’s shop owner Rick Grobe got his first taste of antiques and restoring as a child when his parents bought an old barn.  His store is now celebrating its 50th year and is a mainstay in the Essex antique business.  The store has something for everyone and each piece some with its own story, that is what most people love about antiques.

Essex may be home to the fried clam.

But anyone driving along Main Street passes by more than a few of the town’s 30 antique shops, and one of the oldest ones around is marking its 50th year in the industry.

White Elephant Shop owner Rick Grobe defined a white elephant as “something that no longer has use to it’s current owner,” but Grobe said the shop has something for everyone.

An antique big wheel bicycle, a motorized kayak and an old-style barbers chair are just a few of the classic items found at the antique shop on Main Street . . . Continue Reading

The Canterbury Auction Galleries To Stage Studio Sale Of The Works Of Colin Colahan (1897-1987)

For the first time ever artist Colin Colahan’s studio collection will be offered on the open market at an auctioneer’s sale in April.  There are 105 art pieces including oils, watercolours, charcoal, ink sketches and pencil drawings.   The works include portraits, landscapes, sketches, nudes and self portraits.

In October last year at The Canterbury Auction Galleries, a small group of paintings consigned by the Kent widow of Australian artist and sculptor Colin Colahan (1897-1987) prompted two collectors to travel specially from their Melbourne homes to compete for the prizes on offer. It was an expensive trip as they sought to repatriate works by their country’s forgotten artist.

One paid £14,000 – a world auction record – for an oil titled “Ballet of Wind and Rain (Holland ’45)”, the artist’s personal copy of this most famous work, which depicted Second World War fighter pilots walking away from their planes on a windswept runway.

That sale tested the water. Now, encouraged by the outstanding results, Monique Colahan has instructed the auctioneer to disperse the remainder of her husband’s studio collection, which has been in her safe keeping since his death in 1987. None has been offered on the open market before. The Colin Colahan Studio Sale will be held as part of the auctioneer’s Two Day Sale on Tuesday and Wednesday April 16-17. . . Continue Reading

Something New for Post-Sandy Homeowners to Worry About, State’s Proposed Rebuilding Requirements

Is your home located in V Zone or an A Zone on the new FEMA flood maps?  If so, the Department of Environmental Protection is proposing new flood elevation requirements.  The new requirements would mean new homes or rebuilt homes in these areas would need to be elevated one foot above the FEMA provisional flood-elevation maps.  Residents affected by this proposed change are trying to figure out what this means for them with construction costs, permits, flood insurance premium increases etc.

Residents of New Jersey only have until today to comment on the Department of Environmental Protection’s proposal to adopt new statewide flood-elevation requirements.

As might be expected of anything that has to do with post-Sandy reconstruction — a powder-keg topic given the emotional and financial baggage — the new maps are drawing flak from homeowners and municipal officials.

Some argue that the new requirements are too difficult, in sum or in part, or too expensive to meet (or both). Some insist that their homes have been assigned to the wrong zone, which can be a very costly mistake. Almost everyone is worried about significantly higher insurance rates, which can climb 200 percent or more over five years, according to FEMA. And, not surprising given that concern, virtually all homeowners whether they are rebuilding or starting fresh, want to know where the money to fund a pricey project like elevation is coming from. . .  Continue Reading

Telecommuting benefits both employers and employees

In a recent survey it was found that most employers find telecommuting to be beneficial for both them and their employees.  They feel it leads to more productive and happier employees with a lower rate of absenteeism.  The downside for employees are having to deal with IT remotely and not always have the right work environment or equipment.

As the topic of telecommuting becomes fodder for discussion and debate following Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s decision to end the practice at the California-based company, a new survey indicates that most employees and more than half of business leaders believe telecommuting can be beneficial.

According to the second annual telecommuting survey from Staples Advantage, the business-to-business division of Staples Inc., 93% of employees polled agree that telecommuting programs benefit both employee and employer. Also, 53% of business leaders surveyed say telecommuting leads to more productive employees.

The survey also found that 75% of business decision-makers notice happier employees in a telecommuting-friendly environment, while 37% said allowing the practice has resulted in lower absenteeism. On the employee side, 48% of those who work from home report being less stressed, compared with 25% who said the same in last year’s survey. .  . Continue Reading

Health Department urges affected Willowbrook residents to seek medical attention

Willowbrook residents are finally seeing some action albeit very slow going.  The 272 unit complex has been riddled with serious construction deficiencies with 46 balconies being declared unsafe thus far.  The construction issues have also created a mold problem.  The residents are glad to have the worst behind them and be getting things repaired but say it is moving so slowly that it is a major struggle to live in their homes.  There is no information on when the repairs will be complete.

State Sen. Bill Galvano on Thursday assured the beleaguered Willowbrook community that whoever wants to have a qualified mold assessment of their residence can get one.

Accompanied by Dr. Jennifer Bencie, administrator of the Manatee County Health Department, and Tom Larkin, director of environmental health, Galvano visited neighbors affected by the persistent construction and mold problems, urging those suffering from health issues to contact their family physicians and to have an inspection done by a licensed company.

Building 13 has already tested positive for mold, and repairs have begun, Galvano said. .  . Continue Reading

Saranac Lake water main repaired

After five long days of repairing water leaks in downtown Saranac Lake water has been restored and business is back to normal.   There is a boil-water order in place to ensure the safety of residence until daily samples show no bacteria for two consecutive days. There water leaks were due to the line being more than 100 years old.  Crews worked hard to find all the leaks and repair them to ensure there will be no further issues.

Village workers capped a five-day ordeal Tuesday afternoon by repairing a leaky water main beneath Broadway and turning the water back on to downtown businesses.

The village reopened the normally busy street by 6 p.m. after the village Department of Public Works finished repairing the last known leaky section of water main.

“Repair efforts on all known water breaks under the Broadway block between Olive and Dorsey Streets were completed at 4:45 PM today,” a village press release said Tuesday. “This afternoon, Village employees replaced a 20 (foot) section of iron waterline that had cracked along its length.” . . . Cash-strapped employers unable to offer health insurance

It is difficult for employers to understand how best to take care of their employees working overseas.  Many want to offer employee benefits such as health insurance but cannot due to the expense.  Although only few employers felt it necessary if employees are in the European Union it still remains a focus for about a third of employees who feel it is an essential benefit for employees.

A new survey has revealed that around a quarter of employers want to offer health insurance to workers overseas as one of their employee benefits but simply can’t afford to.

Expacare, with its Anatomy of an international business report, found that financial issues continue to be a barrier when it comes to offering health protection, although some firms continue to deem it essential.

Twenty-eight per cent of respondents said they felt international health insurance was essential for any of their employees working abroad, while a third said it should be a choice made by individual staff members. . . Continue Reading

HUD Announces Radon Testing and Radon Mitigation Policy. Mandatory Radon Testing Begins June 4, 2013

Radon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that kills more than 20,500 people each year. The Environmental Protection Agency has been encouraging more regulations regarding the dangerous gas for over 20 years. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) took a big step forward by announcing mandatory radon testing and radon mitigation in multifamily dwellings affective June 4th, 2013.
Radon gas is widely known as a leading cause of environmental lung cancer throughout the United States. For over 20 years the Environmental Protection Agency has been encouraging more regulation to mandate testing for radon gas and mitigating the problem when levels are 4 pCi/l or higher.
Yesterday, key members of HUD, EPA, Surgeon General, and CDC held a press conference to announce new radon testing and radon mitigation requirements for multifamily structures. Government officials as well as the awareness group Cancer Survivors Against Radon (CSAR) believe that this plan of action will save thousands of lives every year.
According to the American Lung Association, radon gases kill over 20,500 North Americans annually. This statistic makes radon the leading in-home killer in the U.S. “It is unfortunate that so many lives are taken by radon. Most victims live in homes where their air is killing them and they don’t even know it,” states James Gelina. His firm, S.W.A.T. Environmental installs ventilation equipment to rid homes of dangerous radon gas. “Because radon has no color, odor, or flavor; the only way to detect it is by performing a test,” Gelina continued. . . City’s aging pools struggling to stay afloat

The pool where the Sherbrook Shark swimmers practice has been closed because of structural damage to the building.  The problem is lack of funding and maintenance.  This facility, as well as some of the other 13 pools throughout the city have been deteriorating for years and the city was warned and decided to spend fund other places and ignore the report.  Now, they are faced with the decision to spend the millions to repair the facility or close it down. Twelve year-old Jubilee Dueck Thiessen started to do her backstroke underwater after she realized the water splashing her in her face wasn’t from the pool — it was from the roof.

The Sherbrook Shark swimmer first noticed the leak above one of Sherbrook Pool’s lanes more than two years ago, saying you could see the “icky” drops fall into the tank every time it rained or the snow started to melt.

It’s one of many signs the pool was in need of repair. The city closed the 1930s-era facility in November after inspectors discovered 10 pillars supporting the roof had eroded. Officials are still waiting an estimate for how much it will cost to fix the problem. . . Continue Reading
